First battle of Bull Run
The Confederacy won this major battle even though this regiment missed out on it due to transportation issues. The men had been eager to fight but were disappointed when they arrived since they thought the war would be over soon and they wouldn't be involved in any combat.
Battle of Antietam/Sharpsburg
In this battle, the brigade that the 9th Louisiana Infantry was a part of lost 60% of it's men in 30 minutes. Every regimental commander and officer was killed in this fierce battle. Though this battle was considered a draw, General Robert E. Lee of the Confederacy withdrew his army ending the invasion of Sharpsburg.
Battle of Spotsylvania Court House
During this battle, the regiment was forced to fight for 16 long hours before being allowed to fall back.
Chancellorsville Campaign/Battle of the Marye's Height
In May of 1863, the 9th Louisiana Infantry was thoroughly involved in the Chancellorsville Campaign. They attacked the Union at Salem Church, where the casualties were relatively large. The most tragic incident of this Campaign was the accidental shooting of General Jackson who later died from these wounds. The infantry would never fully recover from the loss of this great general.
Battle of the Wilderness
Both the Confederacy and the Union lost large amounts of men and this was also the first encounter with the Union General, Ulysses S. Grant. During this battle, the 9th Louisiana saw their former commander, from 3 years before, General Leroy Stafford severely wounded. He would later die of injuries sustained in this battle.
Battle of Fredericksburg
Even though the regiment was in the reserve for this battle, they still suffered 12 losses due to the heavy artillery fire.
Second Battle of Bull Run
One of the greatest moments occurred for this regiment during this battle. They had repeatedly pushed back Union attacks, and by the third day of the battle, they were running low on ammunition and they had used all of the dead's supplies. A lieutenant ordered the men to throw rocks at the approaching Yankees which caused many of the front line soldiers to fall to the ground injured. Because so many soldiers were injured, the reinforcements for the Confederacy arrived and the brave actions from the 9th Louisiana had helped secure a Confederate Victory.
