This regiment had the highest casualty rate of any Louisiana regiment in the Army of Northern Virginia. For example, during the Battle of Antietam, 60% of our men fell in 30 minutes of the fight. Our regiment lost 25% to 50% of our men in the Battle of Monocacy. In addition to the 25% to 50%, we also lost 4 color bearers in this battle. Overall we lost 701 of our men out of the initial 1,474, not counting the disabled and missing and captured, in the Civil War. 233 killed or mortally wounded in combat, 349 died from disease, 4 from accidental deaths, and 115 from desertions were lost throughout the war. We also lost 21% of the 347 men who participated in the Battle of Gettysburg. During the Battle of Fredericksburg, even though we were on reserve, we lost 12 men to heavy artillery fire. 699 of the 1200 men in Hay's Brigade were captured during the Battle of Rappahannock, and 500 were later released and returned to duty. At the end of the Civil War, there were 373 men left in our brigade. From our regiments organization in early July 1861 to August of that same year, over 100 men died from disease.
